Kaiserschmarrn

Have you ever tried Kaiserschmarrn? It’s my favorite dessert! I have spent the last two years abroad and every time I come home for a visit I have to have Wiener Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn. It can either be a main dish or a dessert. My husband Johannes is the expert in making Kaiserschmarrn and sometimes even our cat Maya wants to help.

Ingredients

Main meal for 2, dessert for 4

  • 1,5 cups (150g) flour
  • 1/2 cup & 5 table spoons (200ml) milk
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla sugar
  • 1 pinch of salz
  • 2 tbsp (30g) butter
  • powdered sugar

 And here is what you have to do:

  1. Let your cat mix salt and flour and then gradually add milk (make sure her paws are clean). If you don’t have a cat to help you out, use eggbeater or hand mixer.
  2. Add eggs and mix thoroughly until all lumps are gone and the batter is neither too thick nor to runny. Then melt butter in a medium-sized frying pan. Use medium heat.
  3. Pour batter into the pan, close the lid and cook until it thickens.
  4. Divide the batter into quarters, turn one after another and let bake for a couple of minutes.
  5. Then sprinkle the pieces with powdered sugar and use two forks to cut it into pieces. Let the pieces caramelize. If you are using a non-stick frying pan it’s better to use spoons.
  6. Repeat this until everything looks yummy!

Kaiserschmarrn tastes great with apple sauce or something we call “Zwetschgenröster” in Germany (or both).
