Colorful Fall Decoration – here’s what you can do with a bit of straw and some dahlias

Here’s another colorful fall flower arrangement that is inexpensive to make and looks mighty impressive. It is perfect for your living room table or a side board. I tried using it as center piece when we had friends over for dinner but it was too high and therefore we weren’t able to see the person sitting opposite.

Materials you will need:

– dry floral foam
– straw
– glue
– small glass tubes
– flowers such as roses and dahlias in your preferred colors

Here is what you have to do:

Step 1: make frame out of dry floral foam

Depending on how long you want to make your flower arrangement, use 2-3 bricks of dry floral foam. I connected the bricks with hot glue and staples. Then I used a knife and spoon to hollow out the bricks.

Step 2: Cut and attach straw

Afterwards, I used scissors to cut the straw into small, about 2-3 cm long pieces. Depending on the size, you will need a lot. For this arrangement  I used up an entire ziplock bag of straw.
Cover the surface of the floral foam with wood glue and coat it with the straw. You might have to let everything dry over night and add some more glue before succeeding in covering everything. I also wrapped some thin gold wire around the whole thing, first of all to stabilize it and secondly because it looks nice.

Step 3: Add glass tubes

Once the straw is completely dried and does not stick to your fingers anymore when you touch it, press the glass tube into the foam – but careful, don’t break it.

Step 4: Add flowers

Once the frame is finished, fill the glass tubes with water. For me using a watering can worked well.  Then add the flowers – et voilà.

Now it’s your turn! Have fun and let me know how it turned out!
